ISO 9001:2000 Implementation Timeline and Cost
Quality Resource Center offers implementation assistance to organizations that want to certify, transition to, or conform to the ISO 9001:2000 Standard.
QRC offers two implementation approaches and you may decide which approach is the best match for the goals of your organization. You may call and request a timeline and quote for implementation assistance.
The Route 2 Method is presented first and is followed by the Protocol Method.
Route 2 Method
The Route 2 Method for certifying to ISO 9001:2000 provides:
- Minimum time to first time certification (typically 7-8 months)
- Time for firms transitioning to the ISO 9001:2000 standard (typically 4 months)
- Pre-agreed timeline
- Reasonable quotes
- Record of 100% first time certification
- Minimum disruption of your present operation
- Most efficient use of your staff resources

The following timeline shows the Route 2 Program to ISO 9001:2000 certification (typically 7 to 8 months). Transition time is 4 months.

Route 2 Process
STEP 1
Strategic meetings are held with company management to identify key Departments/Functions and their interaction in the conduct of the company's business
ISO 9001:2000 is a process-based system. This is the first STEP in identifying key processes and their status
STEP 2
QRC writes the company's ISO 9000 Quality Policy Manual from the information obtained during the Strategic meetings. Management approves the Manual
The Quality Manual identifies the key functional areas of the organization and their responsibilities in achieving the ISO goals
STEP 3
Using the Quality Manual as a guide, QRC conducts interviews at Department
level to identify and evaluate the processes needed to achieve the organization's goals
Processes that need to be developed or improved are identified. Documentation needs are determined
STEP 4
QRC completes the ISO 9001:2000 documentation including Procedures, Quality Plans and Work Instructions
The goal is as little documentation as possible, so that installation and maintenance are more effective and economic
STEP 5
QRC installs the documented processes in each Department. Document release is conducted with QRC's help
The company is now operating to ISO 9001:2000 Standards and is accumulating the process history necessary for Certification
STEP 6
The Quality System is audited (Internal Audits, Pre-Assessment audit), Corrective Actions are completed and management reviews the results
QRC provides help (e.g. Auditor training, Pre-Assessment Audits), as necessary to accomplish these tasks
STEP 7
The selected Certification body conducts a Certification Audit
The Company is Certified to
ISO 9000 Standards
First Time Certification Total Time = typically 7-8 months
Transitioning to ISO 9001:2000 standard = typically 4 months
Why is the Route 2 Method attractive to companies?
Minimum time to first-time certification (typically 7 to 8 months)
The standard time for implementing the Route 2 program is 7 to 8 months. The events on the chart above can be extended over more than eight months to accommodate production needs of a company and budget considerations. The number of months can be shortened slightly by speeding up the documentation process that takes place in the first 3 1/2 months. Several months of records (that verify you are following ISO requirements) must exist before a registrar will perform a registration audit. Thus, to shorten a 7 month timeframe, one would have to shorten the number of weeks devoted to documentation. Large companies and firms with multiple locations may request a suggested timeline for implementation. The standard time for implementing ISO 9001 2000 without outside assistance ranges from 18 months to two years.
Time to transition to the ISO 9001:2000 standard (typically 4 months)
QRC has a systematic and efficient approach for the transitioning process.
Pre-agreed timeline
A calendar of events is prepared based on considerations defined by your company.
Co-Project Management
The Route 2 program is jointly managed by an ISO Coordinator from your company and QRC's ISO 9000 specialist. The ISO Coordinator schedules the activities and access to personnel that is needed for the activities shown on the timeline. QRC does most of the work for you and ensures that your personnel knows how to operate and maintain the ISO 9000 quality system.
Request a Quote
Companies investigating ISO 9001:2000 may request a Route 2 quote as one of the options for implementing an ISO 9000 quality system. This quote allows a company to control both the time and monthly cost of the ISO 9000 project. Companies report that QRC's quoted cost is less than the cost of using the time of their own staff to work on this project. A quote is provided following a short phone conversation.
Record of 100% first-time certification
All companies that have used QRC's full-service implementation program have received certification following their first audit.
Minimum disruption of your present operation
The Route 2 Method recognizes that you must continue to run your company at the same time you are setting up the ISO 9000 quality system. This is why QRC does almost all of the work for you.
Most efficient use of your staff resources
Your personnel provides input and approval of documentation that is prepared by QRC. The amount of time required for these activities is minimal compared to allocating release time for key personnel (and replacing those people) while they work on documentation.
You may request more information on Route 2 and a quote for implementation services.
The Protocol Method
Purpose:
The Protocol Method for ISO 9001:2000 Certification or Conformance is the right tool for organizations that plan to use the principles and directions of ISO 9001:2000 to:
